Selenium in cattle is needed for normal growth and fertility. It also helps reduce mastitis and calf scours. On a cellular level, it is an important anti-oxidant needed to prevent or reduce cellular damage from circulating free radicals. Many areas of the US are deficient in selenium, so it has to be supplemented, but it is regulated by the government as to how much can be added to the rations. Selenium is also critical for a strong immune system.
